How to Clean Common Automotive Soils

The Release® automotive cleaner associates with soils, allowing them to lift from the surface. Test a small, inconspicuous area first and follow the vehicle maker’s care instructions. Work on cool surfaces with an all-purpose cleaner for your car.

Soil Where it Collects Cleaning Approach
Brake dust Wheels and rims Soak the buildup, gently agitate thick deposits, then wipe or rinse. Make a final pass with a clean cloth.
Exhaust soot Around exhaust outlets Wet the residue, allow it to loosen, then wipe it away. Repeat for stubborn deposits.
Bugs Front bumper, grille, and mirrors Keep dried bugs wet while they loosen; reapply if needed, then agitate with a soft microfiber cloth.
Road film Lower body panels Wet the grime and wipe with a clean microfiber cloth, switching to a fresh section as it picks up dirt.
Engine bay grease Accessible greasy surfaces On a cool engine, let the automotive cleaner work into the grease, gently agitate stubborn buildup, and wipe away the residue. Follow the vehicle maker’s guidance around sensitive components when using this automotive degreaser.

For oily residue on painted panels, Release® can serve as a degreaser for car paint. Older car wax formulations can also interact with the Release®, requiring reapplication, so check their ingredients.

How to Clean Leather, Vinyl, and Carpet with Release®

Interior surface Application and dwell time Soil removal
Leather seats Lightly spray and leave for 30 seconds. Wipe with a clean, soft microfiber cloth, then make a final pass with a fresh cloth.
Vinyl dash and door trim Lightly spray and leave for about 30 seconds. Wipe with microfiber; gently work along textured areas if soil remains. Finish with a clean cloth.
Carpet and fabric upholstery Soak the soiled area and leave for 2–3 minutes. Agitate built-up soil if needed, then use a carpet extractor to remove Release® automotive cleaner and the soil. Let the material dry before use.

Dilution Ratios for Automotive Cleaning

For our Release® Ultra Concentrate, we recommend diluting to 1:20; the ready-to-use spray needs no mixing. A 1:20 mix means one part concentrate to 20 parts water. A 1:40 ratio can work for lighter cleaning jobs and will make your supply go farther, but we definitely suggest starting at 1:20 before dialing it down. For best results, use purified, distilled, deionized, or reverse-osmosis water.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use a foaming sprayer instead of a spray bottle?

We use foam where the Release® automotive cleaner needs more contact time on a vertical surface, such as a bug-covered bumper or grimy lower panel. Their spray pattern is ideal for quickly covering a large area, making them a great idea for RV cleaning in particular. For getting small, targeted spots, a spray bottle lets us apply the liquid directly.

How long should I leave Release® on exterior vehicle surfaces before wiping?

For bugs on the front of a vehicle, leave Release® on for 1–2 minutes before gently agitating it, reapplying lightly if it begins to dry. For brake dust on wheels, soak the buildup for 2–3 minutes. We do not give a set dwell time for road film; follow the product directions and test a small area first.
